In good health energy flows smoothly throughout the body. However, as our bodies hold tension or we suffer injuries, the energy gets stuck and stagnates. Energy can also stagnate as a result of emotional stress.
This stagnation of energy causes pain, so clearing stagnation is often an important aspect of treatment for pain. This can be done through acupuncture treatment, or we can move our own energy through exercise.
The best types of exercise for moving stagnant energy are those that work directly with energy, such as qigong, tai chi or other internal martial arts. Aerobic exercise can be very beneficial as well, but it is important not to overexercise as this can deplete the energy which in turn causes more stagnation. Anything that involves moving the body (yoga, dancing, walking) will help move energy.
Consistency is more important than intensity, so talking a walk in the fresh air every day will be more beneficial for moving stagnation than pushing yourself hard in the gym a couple of times a week.
Even when we know what we need to do to improve our health, it can be difficult to build good habits, so check out the post on Developing Good Habits.
